Live edge spalted elm bowl

This piece is a large, handcrafted bowl made from spalted elm wood, featuring beautiful natural patterns and an organic shape. Here’s a detailed description:

1. Material: The bowl is made from spalted elm, a type of wood that is known for its distinctive grain patterns and durability. Spalting occurs when the wood undergoes partial decay, which creates unique lines, color variations, and sometimes contrasting streaks in the wood. This spalting is prominently displayed throughout the bowl.
2. Shape and Design: The bowl has an irregular, organic shape that reflects the natural contours of the wood. The form is deep and spacious, making it highly functional. The rim is asymmetrical, adding to the handcrafted and rustic feel of the piece. This shape also enhances the natural beauty of the elm wood by allowing the grain patterns to flow in a way that feels both natural and intentional.
3. Grain and Spalting: The interior of the bowl showcases the striking spalting patterns of the elm wood. The wood features a mix of light and dark brown tones, with spalting lines that add depth and character to the piece. The grain is clearly visible and runs in a sweeping, almost wavelike pattern across the bowl, adding a dynamic element to the design.
4. Finish: The bowl has a smooth, polished finish that highlights the spalting and enhances the natural beauty of the elm wood. The finish likely provides a protective layer that keeps the wood looking its best while preserving its natural characteristics.
5. Functionality: This spalted elm bowl is both a functional and decorative piece. Its large size makes it suitable for holding a variety of items, such as fruit, bread, or even as a centerpiece on a dining table. The deep form and sturdy construction also make it a practical item for everyday use.
6. Size Reference: The bowl is shown next to a standard-sized coffee mug, indicating that it is quite large. Its size, combined with its unique design, makes it a standout piece that could easily serve as a focal point in any room.

In summary, this spalted elm bowl is a beautifully crafted piece that celebrates the natural beauty of the wood. The spalting and grain patterns, combined with the organic shape, make it a unique and eye-catching item. Whether used functionally or as a decorative piece, this bowl is sure to add a touch of rustic elegance to any space.
