2 Spalted ash bowls.
This piece is a handcrafted bowl made from spalted ash wood, showcasing the natural beauty and unique characteristics of spalted wood. Here’s a detailed description:
- Material: The bowl is made from spalted ash, a hardwood known for its strength and distinctive grain patterns. Spalting occurs when wood undergoes a process of decay, creating unique, often dramatic black lines and color variations within the wood. This spalting is prominently featured throughout the bowl, making it a striking example of nature’s artistry.
- Shape and Design: The bowl has a classic, wide, and gently curved shape with a smooth, round rim. Its form is symmetrical, providing a pleasing balance and making it a versatile piece for various uses. The deep, rounded interior provides ample space, emphasizing its functionality as well as its decorative appeal.
- Grain and Spalting: The grain of the ash wood is beautifully highlighted by the spalting process. The interior of the bowl features sweeping grain patterns interspersed with the characteristic dark lines and patches that define spalted wood. These patterns create a dynamic, almost landscape-like appearance inside the bowl, making it visually captivating.
- Finish: The bowl has a smooth, polished finish that enhances the natural color and patterns of the spalted ash. The finish likely includes a protective coating that preserves the wood while allowing its natural beauty to shine through. The soft sheen adds to the elegance of the piece without detracting from the intricate details of the spalting.
- Functionality: This spalted ash bowl is both a functional and decorative item. Its large size, as indicated by the coffee mug placed next to it, makes it suitable for serving food, holding fruit, or as a centerpiece on a dining or coffee table. The bowl’s unique spalting patterns also make it an attractive decorative object that can stand alone as a piece of art.
